Energy Wholesale Market Review

Throughout June, gas and power contract prices rose amid bullish fundamentals of easing wind outturn coupled with reduced gas flows. We also saw day ahead gas fluctuate due to changing temperatures throughout the month. National Grid: £600 billion investment plan

National Grid has unveiled a plan to invest more than £30 billion in its networks throughout the UK over the next five years. The company said the spending, which is part of a total £60 billion investment across its networks, will unlock economic growth and decarbonise the UK energy system.

National Grid: Winter Outlook

The National Grid has published its Early View of Winter Outlook report for 2024/2025 to give GB’s energy industry enough time to prepare. The report finds that the de-rated margin in the National Grid’s Base Case scenario is 5.6GW (9.4%), which is higher than the 4.4GW (7.4%) published in the 2023/24 Winter Outlook and within the reliability standard.

Consequently, the National Grid notes that it expects to have sufficient operational surplus throughout winter in its Base Case and attributes this to increased interconnector capacity, new gas generation and growth in both battery storage capacity and generation connected at distribution level.

Survey: Nine in ten Brits don’t trust climate claims from businesses

These are key findings from a comprehensive survey of more than 1,000 adults in the UK, jointly conducted by marketing and advertising giant Dentsu and the Conscious Advertising Network (CAN). The survey found that just 9% of participants trust brands to accurately portray their climate commitments, progress and avoid greenwashing. The survey found that most people do not want to support businesses that are deliberately greenwashing, or otherwise supporting the spread of climate-related misinformation and disinformation.

This shows the importance of ensuring your business has an authentic, realistic and achievable strategy for reducing its carbon emissions and becoming net zero.
