Save Water, Save Energy: Drive more decarbonisation and cost efficiencies

Powerful partnerships are unlocking bigger results and greater potential for public sector sites - with hundreds cutting running costs and carbon emissions, by finding better approaches with water.

Enhanced data is delivering more insight and efficiencies, through data loggers on water meters and an online analysis portal, Water Plus can provide. It issues alerts around water use and is accessible whenever needed.

We love to share smarter ways to save water and boost efficiencies, to make managing water easy.

Results, for the public sector in partnerships with Water Plus, have included:

  • Large-scale water-saving approach with 30 public sector sites making savings, in England and Scotland.
  • Helping one of the UK's largest universities track and analyse use, to drive further efficiency and decarbonisation progress.
  • 369 water saving devices installed for a council, with 255 efficiency devices reducing hot water use, to drop energy use. Water audits found taps using an average 15.75 litres a minute, which could be 75% lower, at one of the sites visited (reducing flow to 3.8 litres a minute).*
  • 37% average water-saving identified, on estimated annual water use, in at-scale programme, involving public sector and other sites, with four schools seeing a 38% saving, on average daily water use.
  • Hot water pipe, with 570 litres of water an hour being lost, located and repaired, through the Water Plus team.**  It could have cost an estimated £15,400 in wholesaler water charges, in a year - and the volume is equal to 2,280 cups of tea (holding 250ml each).

Water may be in Scope 3, though it shouldn’t be looked at last, to drive action and engagement.

Carbon cutting actions underway

Our team's work – and additional actions in communities and helping nature – has been recognised with multiple awards for customer service excellence, water efficiency approaches and carbon reductions.

It’s led to a 2025 UK Customer Satisfaction Award, as well as two Global Golds for Water Management in the Green World Environment Awards, 2024 and 2023 - and 10x Green Apple Environment Awards, including for water management.

We are a CO2e Assessed Organisation, completed a Supply Chain Review, in 2025, and we have a science-based target aligned Net Zero target. We gained the Net Zero standard in work with Carbon Footprint and we're continuing to gather more data on carbon emissions.

In 2026, we’re also the only water retailer to be Finalists for two UK Customer Satisfaction Awards, for our approach and enhancements we’re making for customer experiences.

*Council water saving project ran from April to December 2024.

**hot water pipe repair November 2024.
